When you see content on BuzzLayer that has been paid for by an advertiser, we want you to recognise it instantly. This page explains exactly how we handle sponsored content, how it is labelled, and how it stays separate from our independent journalism. If you have any questions, our sponsored content team is ready to help.
What is sponsored content?
Sponsored content is material that an advertiser pays BuzzLayer to publish. It may be an article, a video, a newsletter edition or another format. The advertiser provides the topic or message, but BuzzLayer retains final editorial control over accuracy, tone and compliance with our standards. Every sponsored piece is clearly marked so you know it is not our regular news coverage.
We accept sponsored content only from organisations whose products, services or messages are relevant to our audience and comply with Canadian law and our own editorial guidelines. No sponsor can require us to publish false or misleading information, and we reserve the right to refuse or withdraw any piece that does not meet our quality or ethical standards.
How is sponsored content labelled?
Every sponsored item carries a visible label near the headline stating “Sponsored” or “Sponsored Content.” The same label appears in article metadata, on social-media previews and in newsletter placements. The disclosure is never hidden, tucked into a footnote or written in tiny type. Our readers should never need to hunt for the difference between sponsored material and independent journalism.
In addition, sponsored articles include a brief note at the top or bottom explaining who the sponsor is and that the content has been paid for. This note also links to our Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure page for full transparency about all commercial relationships.
How does sponsored content differ from affiliate links?
Sponsored content is paid for upfront by an advertiser for a specific piece of content. Affiliate links, by contrast, are links within our regular editorial articles that may earn BuzzLayer a commission if you purchase a product after clicking them. Affiliate links are always disclosed in the article itself and in our Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure policy. Sponsored content is not the same as an affiliate link, and the two are never mixed: a sponsored piece will not contain undisclosed affiliate links, and an affiliate-linked article is not sponsored.
We keep these two commercial models separate so that readers always know whether a piece was commissioned by an advertiser or whether it is independent journalism that happens to contain shopping links.
How this works in practice
Imagine a Canadian software company wants to publish a sponsored article on our site about the benefits of its new cybersecurity tool. The company provides a draft and key points. Our editorial team – led by Laura Martinez, our Cybersecurity & Privacy Editor – reviews the material for accuracy, ensures it does not make false claims about competitors, and checks that the piece is clearly labelled as Sponsored. The final version is approved by Editor-in-Chief Alex Nguyen before publication. The sponsor has no say in the headline, the placement on the site or the tone. If we discover a factual error after publication, we correct it the same way we correct any other article, and the sponsor is notified but does not control the correction.
This process guarantees that sponsored content never masquerades as journalism. You can read the piece knowing exactly who paid for it and that our editorial team has kept the content honest.
Who ensures editorial independence?
Editorial independence for all content on BuzzLayer is the responsibility of Editor-in-Chief Alex Nguyen. No commercial partner – whether a sponsor, an advertiser or an affiliate network – can influence or approve editorial conclusions in our news coverage. Sponsored content is managed by a separate commercial team, and the editorial team handles it only to verify accuracy and labelling compliance. Our Editorial Policy details how we protect independence across the entire site.
Our company and funding
BuzzLayer is an independent Canadian digital news publisher owned and operated by Northern Beacon Media Inc., an Ontario corporation (Ontario Business Registry number 1003194827). Our funding comes from display advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, sponsored content, newsletter sponsorships and content licensing. Sponsored content is one of several revenue streams that allow us to deliver free, high-quality journalism. No sponsor or commercial partner has any ownership stake or board control over our editorial decisions. For full details on ownership and funding, see our Ownership & Funding page.
