Complaints Procedure

If something in a news article, headline, editorial decision, or any piece of content on BuzzLayer doesn’t sit right with you, this page explains the straightforward steps to raise a concern. You don’t need legal language or a formal form – just a clear description of the issue and how you’d like us to address it. We treat every complaint seriously and aim to resolve it fairly, quickly, and transparently.

How do I submit a complaint?

Send your complaint by email to complaints@buzzlayer.org with a clear subject line and as much detail as you can provide.

Include the article URL or headline, the date it was published, and a brief explanation of what you believe is wrong – whether it’s an error of fact, a misleading headline, a missing correction, a conflict of interest, or a breach of our editorial policies. Attach supporting evidence if you have it (screenshots, links, documents). You can also call our editorial line at +1 416 555 0220, but email is preferred because it creates a written record. If you’d rather remain anonymous, that’s fine – simply say so in your message. We will not share your identity publicly without your permission.

What happens after I submit?

Your complaint will be logged and reviewed within two business days by our Standards & Fact-Checking team, led by Priya Sharma.

Priya or a designated fact-checker will assess the complaint against our Editorial Policy and Sources & Standards. If the issue is straightforward – for example, a factual error in a number or a misspelled name – we may issue a correction or clarification within 24 hours. More complex complaints (e.g., concerns about editorial bias, missing context, or a potential policy violation) will be escalated to the relevant editor. You will receive an initial acknowledgment within two business days and a substantive response, including any action taken or explanation, within five business days. If we need more time, we’ll let you know and set a new timeline.

Can I escalate my complaint?

Yes – if you are not satisfied with the initial response, you can ask to have your complaint reviewed by Editor-in-Chief Alex Nguyen.

Email alex.nguyen@buzzlayer.org and reference your original complaint. Alex will personally review the matter, consult with the editorial team, and give you a final decision within ten business days. This is the highest internal appeal level. If you believe BuzzLayer has violated a specific professional standard (e.g., from the Canadian Association of Journalists or the Online News Association), you can also contact the relevant body after exhausting our internal process. We will cooperate fully with any external review.

How this works in practice

Let’s walk through a realistic example. A reader notices that a BuzzLayer article about a federal privacy bill incorrectly states that the bill was introduced in 2022 when it was actually introduced in 2023. The reader emails complaints@buzzlayer.org with the article URL and a screenshot of the official legislative record. Priya Sharma’s team verifies the error, alerts the original writer, and publishes a correction with a note at the bottom of the article within 24 hours. The reader receives an email explaining the correction and an apology for the mistake. If the reader felt the correction was insufficient (e.g., they wanted a full retraction), they could escalate to Alex Nguyen. Alex would review the impact of the error, determine that a correction is the appropriate remedy (the error did not change the overall story), and provide a final explanation. The process is transparent at every step.

For concerns about fairness, tone, or missing context, the same path applies: start with complaints@buzzlayer.org, then escalate if needed. Our goal is always to treat your concern with the same rigour we apply to our journalism.

Who oversees BuzzLayer’s editorial standards?

BuzzLayer is owned and operated by Northern Beacon Media Inc., an Ontario corporation (Ontario Business Registry company number 1003194827). Our registered office is at Unit 12, 95 King Street East, Toronto, ON M5C 1G4, Canada.

Editorial independence is central to our mission. While commercial partnerships (display advertising, affiliate links, sponsored content) fund our operations, they never determine editorial conclusions. All sponsored or commercial material is clearly labelled. If a complaint touches on a commercial relationship – for instance, an undisclosed affiliate link – it is handled by the Standards team with oversight from Alex Nguyen. You can read our full Ownership & Funding disclosure and Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure for more details. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle any personal data you share with us during the complaints process.

If you have a concern about anything on BuzzLayer, email complaints@buzzlayer.org with the details. Our team will respond within two business days and work to resolve it. If you’re not happy with the outcome, you can escalate directly to Editor-in-Chief Alex Nguyen. We are committed to being accountable to our readers and to the standards of trustworthy Canadian journalism.
