Ownership & Funding

This page explains who owns BuzzLayer, how we are funded, and how we protect editorial independence. If you have a question about our business operations or want to explore a commercial partnership, the details below will help you understand exactly how BuzzLayer works as a company and a newsroom.

Who owns and operates BuzzLayer?

BuzzLayer is owned and operated by Northern Beacon Media Inc., an Ontario corporation registered with the Ontario Business Registry under company number 1003194827. The registered office is at Unit 12, 95 King Street East, Toronto, ON M5C 1G4, Canada. Northern Beacon Media Inc. is a Canadian company that publishes BuzzLayer as its sole digital news property. The company is privately held, and all editorial decisions are made independently within the BuzzLayer newsroom.

How is BuzzLayer funded?

BuzzLayer generates revenue through a mix of display advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, sponsored content, newsletter sponsorships, and content licensing. Every piece of sponsored or commercial material is clearly labelled so readers can distinguish it from independent journalism. Affiliate links are disclosed in accordance with Canadian advertising standards. No commercial relationship — whether with an advertiser, sponsor, or partner — determines editorial conclusions, story selection, or the angle of any article. The newsroom and the business team operate separately, and editorial staff do not report to the commercial side of the company.

How this works in practice

Consider a typical week at BuzzLayer. The business development team might secure a sponsorship from a Canadian cloud-computing provider for our weekly tech newsletter. That sponsorship is clearly marked at the top and bottom of the newsletter. Meanwhile, our Startups & Innovation Correspondent, Chris O’Brien, is working on a story about data-security practices among Canadian cloud providers. The sponsor has no advance knowledge of the story, no input into its content, and no right to review it before publication. If the story includes an affiliate link to a cloud-service comparison tool, that link is disclosed in the article. The same separation applies to every story, every day.

Who is accountable for editorial independence?

Editor-in-Chief Alex Nguyen is ultimately responsible for all editorial standards, publication decisions, and corrections at BuzzLayer. Alex reports to the publisher (Northern Beacon Media Inc.) but has full authority over newsroom operations, story selection, and the editorial budget. No advertiser, sponsor, or commercial partner can influence Alex’s decisions. If you believe editorial independence has been compromised, you can contact Alex directly at alex.nguyen@buzzlayer.org or +1 416 555 0220. You can also read more about our full editorial team on our team page.

In short
