Our Story

This page tells you why BuzzLayer exists, how we work, and what you can expect from our journalism. If you are curious about our team, our standards, or how we are funded, the sections below will guide you to the details.

Why was BuzzLayer founded?

BuzzLayer was founded by Northern Beacon Media Inc. to fill a gap in Canadian digital journalism: clear, practical coverage of technology, innovation and digital policy without spin or oversimplification. Canadian readers often had to choose between superficial tech summaries and dense industry reports. BuzzLayer bridges that gap with stories that explain complex issues in plain, trustworthy language, written by named journalists and reviewed by editors before publication.

Northern Beacon Media Inc., an Ontario corporation, launched BuzzLayer in 2022 after seeing how often Canadians were left out of conversations about technology that directly affects their lives—from privacy regulation to startup funding. The site is built for English-speaking readers in Canada and internationally who want to understand not just what is happening, but why it matters.

What is our editorial philosophy?

Editor-in-Chief Alex Nguyen leads a newsroom that puts human editorial judgement at the centre of every story. AI tools may support research or drafting, but no piece is published without a named writer, a reviewing editor, and fact-checking. Our philosophy is simple: trustworthy Canadian journalism that helps readers navigate complexity without dumbing it down.

Alex Nguyen (alex.nguyen@buzzlayer.org, +1 416 555 0220) sets editorial standards and is responsible for all publication decisions and corrections. Every editor and reporter is listed on our Our Team page, along with their direct contact information. We believe transparency builds trust, so you can always see who wrote a story, who edited it, and how to reach them.

How is the newsroom organised?

Our desk structure covers the key areas our readers care about: consumer tech, cybersecurity, startups, and policy. Managing Editor Maya Singh runs the daily newsroom, reviews headlines, and commissions stories. Each desk has a dedicated editor who knows the beat inside out. You can meet the whole team on our Our Team page.

David Kim is Consumer Tech Editor, Laura Martinez is Cybersecurity & Privacy Editor, and Chris O’Brien is Startups & Innovation Correspondent. Priya Sharma leads Standards & Fact-Checking, ensuring every claim is verified before publication. This structure means a story about a new privacy law will be handled by Laura’s desk, fact-checked by Priya’s team, and reviewed by Maya or Alex before it goes live.

What can you expect from our journalism?

Every article carries a named byline. Every source is attributed unless a legitimate safety reason prevents it. If we make a mistake, we correct it promptly and transparently, as set out in our corrections policy. Our full standards are published in our editorial policy and Sources & Standards page, where you can read about how we choose and verify sources.

We also publish a detailed fact-checking policy that explains our process. Readers can submit corrections or complaints via our contact page or directly to our fact-checking lead at priya.sharma@buzzlayer.org. We take accuracy seriously because it is the foundation of trust.

How this works in practice

Let’s take a concrete example: a story about new federal privacy legislation. Laura Martinez, our Cybersecurity & Privacy Editor, identifies the story and assigns it to a reporter. The reporter interviews experts, reads the bill text, and drafts the article. That draft goes to Laura for editorial review, then to Priya Sharma’s team for fact-checking—they verify quotes, dates, and any data cited. Finally, Managing Editor Maya Singh or Editor-in-Chief Alex Nguyen approves the story. If a correction is needed later, it is appended to the article and noted in our corrections log. This process ensures every piece is accurate, clear, and accountable.
