Haze in weather means fine particles — dust, smoke or pollutants — suspended in the air, cutting horizontal visibility below 10 kilometres. Unlike fog, haze is dry and does not form from water vapour. The live forecast above shows haze weather today for your area.

What causes haze weather?

Haze forms when tiny particles — from wildfire smoke, industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust or windblown dust — accumulate in a stable air mass. In Canada, summer wildfire smoke is a common source, while winter haze often comes from temperature inversions trapping pollutants near the ground. The same stable conditions that keep haze in place can also worsen air quality.

Is haze weather dangerous?

Yes, especially during heavy events. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in haze can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. People with asthma, COPD or heart conditions should limit outdoor exertion when haze is thick. Check weather warnings and air quality statements from Environment Canada for your region.

What is the difference between haze vs fog?

Haze consists of dry particles — dust, smoke or pollutants — while fog is made of tiny water droplets. Haze gives the air a milky or yellowish tint and feels dry; fog feels damp and appears white or grey. Visibility in fog is often much lower.

Can haze affect air quality indoors?

Yes. Fine particles from heavy haze can seep indoors through windows, doors and ventilation systems. Running a HEPA air cleaner, keeping windows closed and using recirculated air in your car can reduce exposure during poor air quality days.

How long does haze weather typically last?

Duration depends on the source. Wildfire smoke haze can persist for days until the fire is contained or wind shifts. Pollution-based haze often clears with a passing front or rainfall. The live forecast above shows current trends for your location.
