Check the live radar above to track rain, snow, and mixed precipitation moving across your region. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s network of weather radars provides near-real-time maps covering most of the country, from Vancouver Island to the Atlantic coast and up into the territories.
How does weather radar work?
Weather radar sends out pulses of microwave energy that bounce off precipitation particles. The returning signal shows where rain or snow is falling, its intensity, and how it is moving. The live radar above updates every 10 minutes, giving you a reliable picture of what is heading your way — whether you are in downtown Toronto, near St. John’s NL, or watching an Ontario weather radar live loop for the next 24 hours.
Where is radar coverage strongest?
Canada’s radar network covers most populated areas, with some gaps in the far north. The best coverage exists in southern Ontario, the St. Lawrence lowlands, and Atlantic Canada. For example, an Ontario weather radar 24-hour loop will clearly show lake-effect snow squalls off Georgian Bay, while a weather radar Atlantic Canada view captures nor’easters as they move through Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. If you need detailed information for a specific city, such as a Toronto weather radar live image, the live radar above is your fastest resource.
Why does the radar sometimes show rain that never reaches the ground?
The radar beam may overshoot shallow showers or detect virga — precipitation that evaporates before hitting the ground. This is most common in dry air masses across the Prairies and interior B.C.
How accurate is radar for my exact location?
Radar accuracy decreases with distance from the antenna and can be affected by hills, buildings, and atmospheric conditions. Use the live radar as a guide, and always check local weather stations for conditions at ground level.
What do the different colours mean on a weather radar map?
Lighter colours indicate light precipitation, while deeper reds and pinks signal heavy rain or snow. The scale on the radar map matches a legend — Environment Canada uses a standard palette across all its weather radar environment Canada products.
